BotM: June 2009
We turn our attention outside the Rockies Organization again for our June Beard of the Month. Thankfully, this time we turn to a National League foe the Rockies have dominated so far this year and not a division rival. So it is without reservation that we bestow the honor of June 2009 Rockiescast Beard of the Month upon Ryan Franklin’s broom chin.

As you can see here, his face makes a strong case for his candidacy. Like other BotM recipients this season, Franklin’s beard has seen great success on the mound in 2009. As of the time of this post, Franklin’s beard has a WHIP of 0.84 and an ERA of 0.84 in 32 innings this season. Not surprisingly, those stats have earned this beautiful goatee a spot on the All-Star game to delight the home fans in St. Louis. It’s a real chin-warming story.
We should also note that personal history also played a role in the decision to give Franklin’s beard BotM honors. A quick search of the Internet for pictures of Ryan Franklin will turn up a handful of different decent facial hair configurations. Rockiescast can’t help but respect a guy who is willing to try out so many looks and do it awesomely. So Ryan Franklin, congratulations on having an award-winning broom on your face.

Just get a load of that beard - he really could sweep with that thing. Not only floors, but opposing teams as well (but not against our Rockies, of course).

His look in that picture just seems to say, “Me want win Beard of Month!” Well, what he wants, he gets.

Jason Marquis has tasted the Mancrush and just can’t get enough. He will do all in his power to get his fix again next week. Take that Nats!

Did anyone actually see the play on TV where the Nats guy took an error in the balls? I had KOA on and Jack and Jeff were sort of dancing around it although it was pretty clear what happened (”he committed the cardinal sin of infielders, which is not wearing any protective gear around your midsection”). And I guess it took him a while to get up. They’re not showing it on the ESPN highlights or on in the AP article.
Anyway, after watching last night’s game (from Row 22 Section 122!) I was kind of scratching my head over how the Nats have such an awful record. I mean they got at least one guy who can pitch, and they sure seemed to have a decent lineup. But when you play defense like they did tonight you’re not going to win a lot of games.

I saw it. I actually called Ted right after it happened, but he was watching on a DVR delay and was still in the 2nd inning.
The defense has been a problem for the Nats all year. As has been pitching, starting and bullpen, which is why I am very surprised at the pitching so far from the Nats this series. I expected the young, inexperienced staff to have major problems at Coors. It could be that the Rox hitters are not taking advantage of their mistakes. During the Nats broadcast, Rob Dibble (who I really don’t like listening to) talked a lot about Zimmerman having trouble with his breaking stuff, but kept trying to throw it instead of using his change-up. He was right, as not long after that Zimmerman got a guy swinging on a 2 strike change-up low and away. I definitely saw a few sliders up in the zone that the Rox should have crushed, but didn’t. I guess that’s the difference between a win and a Happy Taco Day.

Willie Harris gets hit in the Charlie Browns at about the 35-second mark of this game recap: http://colorado.rockies.mlb.com/media/video.jsp?content_id=5454681&c_id=col
They don’t do nearly enough replaying of the incident from multiple angles, but at least it’s in there.

Thanks guys, I guess it was about as bad as I had expected. Do they keep stats of how often that happens? I can’t remember ever seeing, hearing or reading about any one taking a ball there while apparently not wearing protection in the Majors.
Also since this is the BotM thread I thought I should share the best (and I guess only) jeer I heard from the fans at Monday night’s game: “HEY NICK JOHNSON DID YOU STEAL YOUR MUSTACHE FROM A PEDOPHILE?” I would encourage you to go find a picture of Mr. Johnson to confirm just what a witty inquiry this was, but he’s so unspeakably ugly you should probably just take my word.

If a man chooses to sport a 70’s porn ’stache, that is his decision and he has my full support. If a woman made the same choice, I might question her decision. Sorry for the double-standard ladies, but that’s just my honest opinion.
Ted July 9th at 10:09 am
I suspect that Nick Johnson is sporting a load-bearing mustache. It’s all that’s holding him up. How else would you explain the Mark Prior of first basemen staying off the DL for so long?

nice pic. when you google nick johnson you also get a fair number of hits which are just the crazy guy from full metal jacket. which i think makes a great deal of sense.
by the way i blame the loss entirely on he train delay. somehow that uber- line of thunderstorms apparently missed fort fun, but i was extremely enraged by every stroke of lightning i could see off to the east as i walked home from the bar.
mike July 11th at 12:17 am
wow i sure misplaced that ‘t’. but a train delay could have conceivably caused the rox to lose as well.

Well, it looks like the Rockies have just gotten the impetus they may have needed to go out and aggressively pursue some strong middle relief. I hope Alan Embree has a quick recovery, and can come back strong next year, from this injury, although the FSN commentators were talking about how Jason Hirsh was never the same after having his leg broken. That may be a problem, as Clint Barmes was quoted after the game as saying, “He’s had one great career and hopefully this isn’t the end of it.” All the best, Alan.

my ipod broke, I’m pretty sad… now I have to listen to Rockiescast on my computer, and that’s pretty lame. oh well, what can I say?
Ted July 12th at 7:01 pm
First Alan Embree and now Abreana’s ipod? Why is everything breaking this weekend?
