SABRmetrics Outside the Bun

Happy Tacos

Statistical analysis just got a whole lot tastier. Andrew Martin, contributor to Purple Row and Rockiescast, has done some groundbreaking research in the field of tacos.  Specifically, he’s calculated statistics on how individual Rockies hitters contribute to providing cheap tacos to the people of Colorado. Take a look, be amazed, and start to drool.

Also, thanks to Mike from Ft. Collins for documenting his fever-feeding.

Remarkably, or perhaps shamefully given how recent it was, that was taken the day I popped my four-tacos-for-a-dollar-with-purchase-of-a-drink-when-the-rockies-score-seven-or-more-runs cherry.

On a related note, what would have happened if the Rockies had scored seven or more runs in both games of today’s double header, aside from avoiding the embarrassment of dropping 3 out of 4 to the Mets? Would it be 8 tacos for $1? 4 tacos for $.50? Tacos from 3 - 7pm? Limit TWO deals per customer? I missed the first game, I’ll just assume this discussed at length by Jack and Jeff. Also I thought Jeff was only going on the road for the last Dodgers series since his, uh, incident? Not so, apparently.

Also, I finally just got “The Pen is Mightier” title of the last podcast. Nice.

Hey Kylie, that TORR stat that Andrew created will take a few minutes of quiet contemplation to wrap one’s head around. It’s based on the SABRmetric theory that if you can calculate each player’s statistical value in his team’s efforts to win ballgames, you can also calculate the minimum a big league player must produce to be more valuable than the average player that gets called up from AAA. In other words, it’s a measure of how much a player needs to produce to not lose his job. It’s explained all thoroughly and whatnot here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Value_over_replacement_player.

Andrew took that concept and applied it to cheap taco production. A TORR of 0.00 represents the cheap taco contribution one would expect from the average batter just called up from AAA. Atkins comes closer to that TORR than any other Rockie. So if he were to be replaced by Dan Ortmeier or EY2, we would expect the pace of Rockies cheap taco production to go relatively unchanged.

Also, I like the way you think, Mike. I spent yesterday morning nervously hoping the Rockies would score 7+ in both doubleheader games just so we could find out how the cheap taco situation would work out. I guess it’s true what they say: great minds think about tacos.

My guess was the limit of two deals per customer. Unfortunately, we won’t get to find out this time around. Maybe someone should e-mail the booth during next Tuesday’s game to see if Drew and Fraz/Huey know the rules there.

That’s a good idea, Ted. If no one else does, I will.

Google News search “Jeff Kingery” first hit. (don’t want to wait for the post to be moderated because it has a link).

He’s paying his own way and intends to do all the road games the rest of his way. Rockies say they are comfortable with arrangement. A cause for optimism he might stay on down the line.

Ah yes…good find, Mike! Who knew that one could find the info they seek by searching on this “Google” thing the kids are talking about.

Allow me to post and moderate a link to one of the news stories all at once: http://www.denverpost.com/rockies/ci_12926831.
