Rockies Sign Top Pick Tyler Matzek
The Rockies have agreed to terms with Tyler Matzek, their first round pick and the top left-handed pitcher in this year’s draft. This is great news for the organization. Nobody knew if he would fall to the Rockies in the draft (he was projected to go as high as #2) and if he did fall, the Rox ability to sign him was a big question mark. Even though the contract is worth about half of what it was originally estimated it would take to sign Matzek (as far as I can recall), it is still a record signing bonus for a Rockies first-year player. Matzek has a fastball that touches 94 mph (not bad for an 18-year-old), a curve and slider that both can be plus pitches if he can locate them regularly, and a change-up that will likely need to be worked on and featured more as he faces higher-level competition. More than anything else, he makes me feel extremely old, having been born in 1990. While I don’t expect to see him up in the bigs any time soon, it’s nice to know that the Rox are willing to spend a little money on a guy that has tremendous upside and potential to help the club 3-4 years down the road.

One big question I still have about Matzek is whether or not he can grow awesome facial hair. I can’t imagine what I would do if the Rox had a guy with the ability to pitch like Ubaldo and grow facial hair like Spilly.

On an unrelated note, is anyone going to make it out to either of the Dodgers games next Tues/Wed while Ted and I are in town? The fight for the NL West should be enough to draw you out to the ballpark. The opportunity to meet the greatest co-hosts in Rockiescast history is just icing on the taco.

I’m looking forward to seeing what this guy can do in the future…
As for Scott’s question, no I won’t be able to get out to any of the games. (If I had a job (aka - a way of making money) and if I had a license and a car, then I’d be going to a Rockies game every week… But I don’t have any of these, so it’s out of the question.) Have an awesome time though, guys!! Take pictures and post them on the site.
