What A Sad Day

I’m sad. I’m confused. I don’t know what to do. Do I root for the Phillies? Can I support a team whose fans represent the worst that professional sports has to offer? Do I root for the Yankees? Can I possibly turn to the dark side and cheer on a team that has done more to ruin baseball than any other? Does anyone out there have any advice?

Gotta go for Phils. Can’t blame ‘em for their fans, the yanks fans are just as awful, we’re just not as exposed to them. Much rather have it that the Rox fell to the eventual champion. Plus the Phillies actually play real baseball. There are plenty of reasons to despise both teams, but however bad their fans are and how much money went into making these teams, objectively speaking it’s a helluva match, at least on paper, the best we’ve seen in years. It’s got real potential to go 6 or 7 riveting games. And hey, it could be worse, we could be Mets fans.

Phils in 6, MVP Pedro Martinez wins game 2 and 6 at the new Yankee Stadium, thoroughly ruining its inaugural season. You heard it here first.

Oh and I just thought of how much worse it would be on Mets fans if Pedro shows up big time in the series for the Phils after having given them absolutely nothing. Go Phils!

That’s some solid reasoning all around to pull for the Phillies. While these are two very high budget teams (8 Pittsburghs for the Yankees & 4 Pittsburghs for the Phils), at least the Phillies aren’t doing all they can to totally destroy a small market team’s ability to pay market value for a halfway decent player. Yankees management really goes out of its way to ruin the game of baseball. It’s like they’re being jerks for the sake of being jerks.

Meanwhile, the Phillies boast some homegrown talent, which I suppose we’re obligated to appreciate as Rockies fans. 3 of their 4 highest paid players came up with the organization. The other is Brad Lidge, which is hilarious.

You say you can’t blame the Phils team for their fans, but I think fans are as much a part of an organization as the players. After all, the fans are the whole reason I can’t stand Boston sports teams. I never had a problem with them until I went to college with a whole lot of obnoxious people from Mass.

While the Yankees do buy the bigger budget free agents, the two teams have about the same amount of homegrown players in their starting lineups and rotations. It’s tough to deny the impact that Jeter, Pettitte & Mariano have had for the Yankees. But before I start to sound like I’m defending the Yankees, that is certainly not the case. I hate them so very, very much. I am only pulling for them over the Phillies because (at this point in time) my hatred of the Phillies is greater than that of the Yankees. It seems like the Yankees are trying to ruin baseball, but the Phillies are trying to ruin my life. But it could be worse. I could be a Mets fan. Oh… wait.

When picking a team in this series, it’s really not a case of right vs wrong. There is no right answer. Just pain and misery.

I’ll be honest, I really can’t bring myself to root for either team. Being raised a Red Sox fan, and being a fan of baseball where teams actually have to try hard and raise some of their own players, there’s no part of me that can cheer for the Yankees. With the Phils, they’re the team that kicked my favorite AL team out of the playoffs last year, and they also kicked my favorite NL team out this year (um, that would be the Colorado Rockies, for those keeping score at home). So basically it’s my least-favorite NL team up against my least-favorite AL team. I love baseball with a passion that burns like a thousand suns, and yet at the end of the day I’m rather indifferent about this Series. That’s saying something.

So much for my theory that the 6 days off would cool down the Phillies’ bats. As usual, my series predictions are based on nonsense. Now it will be interesting to see if the Yankees bats wake up when they don’t have to face Cliff Ridiculous Lee.

Lauren, you could try battling indifference the way my icy, black heart is telling me to: root for the visiting team in each game. It sure is satisfying to see the somber crowd heading for the exits early. Hope it was fun being cold and wet, suckers!

I thought the same thing last night. It would be nice for the home team to keep losing so the fans that spent so much money on those tickets never actually get to enjoy a live game. I’m hoping for the home team to lose games 1-6.
