Favorite Things
During the last episode, Ted promised a post with a link to friend of the show Ted Berg’s blog entry about Dan O’Dowd. Thanks to the wonderful people at Verizon, Ted still has no internet. So it’s a bit delayed, but here it is.
Spring Training is in full swing and the season is a month away. The anticipation of Opening Day makes this one of my favorite times of year so I began to think about all of the things that make baseball so great. Here are a few of my favorite things…
Hotdogs and nachos all covered in chili
Todd Helton’s goatee and sweet-bearded Spilly
Getting excited with each Tulo swing
These are a few of my favorite things
Seats in the purple row and the Rockpile
My rekindled mancrush with each Fowler smile
Seth Smith proves why he’s the late-inning king
These are a few of my favorite things
Ubaldo on the mound mowing down batters
Every year Tony Gwynn gets even fatter
His diet must be mostly buffalo wings
Maybe occasionally some onion rings
When the bat cracks
When the crowd cheers
When I’m in the stands
I flag down a vendor and buy me a beer
And think that life is grand
VoRP, WAR, UZR, it all gets confusing
Year after year the poor Pirates keep losing
Attendance at Marlins’ games so bad it stings
These are a few of my favorite things
Aaron Cook’s sinker inducing a ground ball
Remembering the Steinbrenners are giant a$$%*!&$
Pitchers and catchers reporting each spring
These are a few of my favorite things
Minute Maid Park and the flag pole in center
Phillies fans throw beer while you try to enter
Tickets that cost more than flights to Beijing
These are not some of my favorite things
Extra innings
Walk off homers
Catches at the wall
Score seven or more for cheap tacos galore (with the purchase of a beverage)
Can’t wait to hear those words… “Play ball!”

Additional favorite things that didn’t make the song (for length purposes) but are still definintely on my list include: stealing home, Bob Eucker, catchers picking off runners by throwing behind them, unassisted triple plays, perfectly-executed hit-and-runs, plays at the plate, the distance Prince Fielder would be able to hit a ball if it wasn’t pulled back towards the plate by the gravitational pull of his planet-sized body, Vin Scully, dollar dog nights, Todd Helton scooping balls in the dirt, pitchers sangging linedrive comebackers behind their back, the mute button on my remote control when Joe Morgan is calling games, classic double-headers, pitchers hitting homeruns, Carlos Zambrano emotional meltdowns, hilarious minor league promo days.

Ah wonderful work, Scott! Bravo. We’ve missed your song lyrics, and this one happens to be quite excellent. I’m so excited for Opening Day!

I enjoyed Ted Berg’s analysis of the NL West. Things are looking bright indeed for the Rockies going into this year. Listened to a little spring training action this afternoon on KOA, I’m not sold on the Kingery replacement yet (Jerry Schemmel), but I guess we have to see how he reacts when the action actually counts. I was kind of hoping I would get to hear him trying to tune up a home run call for the regular season, but it never came to, uh, touch ‘em all time in this particular game.

It’s not the Rockies, but in case anyone is curious, Stephen Strasburg is making his spring debut for the Nats today against the Tigers. It’ll be on the MLB network at 1pm (my time here on the east coast). With the ridiculous amount of hype he’s received, I’m interested to see how he handles himself against a lineup that could include some veteran players and possibly one of the best hitters in the game if Miguel Cabrera is in there.
